It wasn’t hard to tell where MPs’ sympathies lay when the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee conducted its inquiries earlier this year. Pubcos Bad, Licensees Good. It really was as clear cut as that. If not quite a kangaroo court, the hearings smacked of a pre-determined outcome. So Monday’s call for a statutory code for an industry that had, in the MPs’ words, made only slow, half-hearted attempts to reform itself, was entirely predictable.

Darran Lingley MBII of the Five Bells, Colne Engaine, Essex was crowned 2011 Licensee of the Year at the BII Annual Lunch held in London on Tuesday.

Following last year’s success in raising funds for the Licensed Victuallers’ Schools, we will again be having a charity motor bike ride.

In the last few months BII has acted as mediator in four major cases, resolving issues between licensees and their pub operating companies. The success of these cases has led the BII to launch a new mediation service to the trade which will sit alongside the existing services offered by BIIBAS and PIRRS.

BIIBAS is inviting licensed trade professionals with the appropriate credentials to join an approved list of advisors. The aim of the scheme is to make it easier for licensees to access advice. By independently and responsibly recommending quality assured professionals within the licensed trade BIIBAS hopes to encourage more licensees to seek advice.

BII is sad to announce that Alec Roud CMBII, Chairman of Wessex Region sadly passed away last Thursday (24th February).

BII is planning to launch the first Apprenticeship Programme designed specifically for staff working in pubs. The aim is to develop skills to make them more effective in their work in pubs across the country. BII is now actively seeking candidates for its first pilot which will take place in the East Midlands in early spring and will be run by training partners Tribal PLC and Charnwood Training
